A different type of cabeceo

February 17, 2013

The “nod” works only in Buenos Aires. In this city man and woman seal dance agreements though invisible telegrams (nods) – sent from across dance floors. The nod is a Buenos Aires’s wise code that has not taken in other cultures. [My book explains its wisdom on pages xyz ].

A Facebook message from Galán pops up as I am doing my bussiness at home: “Hola..” He is inviting me to dance a tanda the following day, at the Tuesday milonga.

What? . . . an electronic nod? I have never danced with him.. He has never appealed to me. But I am intrigued and accept without hesitation.

Another text follows: Galán offers to line up the music for our dance. “What’s your favorite orchestra?” “And your second favorite.” I’ve never been given the choice of dancing to my favorite orchestras. He could make this happen because … Yes, you are probably guessing he is the DJ! Agreement sealed. Ha! No wonder I had noticed the DJ was gone from his booth for long periods of time at the Tuesday milonga. He has a clever methodology to secure his dances!

Wondering how this arrangement turned out?  Look for the next postcard.
