Surprise encounter with tango icon Mariano Mores.

February 4, 2012

My wondering gaze takes its time scrutinizing the orange-colored hair of my neighbor. That’s a favorite pastime at outdoor café Aroma. We watch people and connect if gazes cross.

Oh … yes, my neighbor.

I recognize the hair. I remember seeing this one of a kind hair on the stage of Teatro Rex some years ago. This recognizance lowers my gaze to discover that my neighbor is Mariano Mores, the pianist, director and composer I remember so well from my childhood.

Without hesitation I move towards his table. I anticipated being welcomed. Indeed, he greets me warmly. How o engage him in conversation? I share my childhood memories about his music and the radio. I name some of his most popular songs. To my delight I can tell he is enjoying our conversation.

An aside – being recognized must matter a great deal to someone who received so much recognition throughout his active career.

A passing couple stops to takes pictures. They are from Chile, they say. We are comrades united by respect for this iconic musician and probably for tango.

They volunteer to email me the photo. Muchas gracias Chilenos!
