I have the joy of interviewing Alberto Podestá, my friend for seven years. He is one of the few living singers of the “Golden Era” of tango. Dancers begin to gather one hour prior to the scheduled milonga. Eagerly, we wait for him.
He appears with a sunny smile. Sitting next to me and with a memory that defies the passage of time, he charms us with stories about his origins, his singing (since age 9), his move to Buenos Aires as an adolescent, and his “new family” in the big metropolis (the musicians and poets in orquesta Miguel Caló).
Way into the milonga he gives us three tangos. We listen to him in delight. I believe we are hearing the young man with the powerful voice that recorded our beloved music and, that through his voice we are connecting with the ethos of an era we miss.
For more information about Podesta see “In Strangers’ Arms” Chapter 10, totally dedicated to experience him as a human being.
