This book starts off dispelling the myths surrounding the dance, probes and discovers what tango is when sensationalism is stripped away. I like how conclusions are drawn about tango from watching how Argentines act in everyday life. I feel Dujovne is “one of us”; so many writers either use sensationalism and cliches to sell their stories, or (many times unsuccessfully) try to convey their experience without any context, history, or understanding of the human behaviors that drive our actions in the dance setting. As a long-time tango dancer and frequent traveler to Buenos Aires, I find Dujovne’s insights into the cultural similarities and differences between porteños and non-porteños fresh, interesting and accurate from it’s roots to the present.
