I did not mind when the discussion I wanted to attend at the Centro Cultural de la Cooperación on Avenida Corrientes got cancelled. I knew that strolling along avenida Corrientes will bring a surprise, perhaps some amazing one.
A two blocks walk taking photos of Corrientes at night and … voila! I did not know that Teatro Apollo was featuring the musical “Yocasta and Edipo, a cry in the immensity.” This was certainly the amazing surprise.
Any tickets left?
“Yes.”
I looked across the street and smiled: another theatre featured “Bajo Therapy.” In my experience one, two or three plays feature psychoanalytic themes at all times in this city. As you well know, Buenos Airs is in love with psychoanalysis. Theatre plays are just one evidence, listening to men and men women conversing about Lacan over breakfast is another one. I wrote in my book about the relationship between our love of tango and psychoanalysis, remember?
The musical is based on the Greek myth that went from Freud’s pages to literature, music, psychology, and to breakfast conversations in Buenos Aires
This si the first time that the Oedipus myth reaches the stage as a musical, an impecable Argentine production. It does it in grand form: the cast, selected from among the best voices in the Argentine musical genre, is spectacular. There are 30 artists in scene including live musicians. Music ranges from folkloric with greek reminiscences to jazz, epic and electronic.
The production is an Argentine creation.
